Impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on the mental health of healthcare workers in Belgium

De COVID-19-pandemie zette het gezondheidszorgsysteem en het zorgpersoneel in de meerderheid van de landen inclusief België onder hoge druk. Dit heeft de ziekenhuizen ertoe aangezet om hun diensten te reorganiseren, de capaciteit van de spoeddiensten en intensive care units te verhogen, te zorgen voor aangepaste uitrusting voor zowel patiënten als personeel en het personeelsbestand van de gezondheidszorg zo veel mogelijk te versterken maar dergelijke crisissen brengen ontegensprekelijk de zwakte van een systeem aan het licht. In ons gezondheidszorgsysteem is het ziekenhuispersoneel misschien getuige geweest van de structurele gebreken en hun gevolgen. Het feit dat zij rechtstreeks in contact zijn gekomen met COVID-patiënten en te maken hebben gekregen met een ongewoon verlies van mensenlevens terwijl het beschermingsmateriaal nog niet voorhanden was, heeftonder eerstelijnszorgverleners waarschijnlijk de vrees voor besmetting alsook gevoelens van wanhoop en onveiligheid doen stijgen. Deze situatie kan een langdurige negatieve invloed hebben op de mentale gezondheid van deze personen. Het internationale project COVID-19 HEROES heeft als doel de impact van de COVID-19-pandemie op de sociale aspecten en de mentale gezondheid van het eerstelijnsziekenhuispersoneel te beschrijven en te evalueren. In het project wordt deze cohorte 12 maanden opgevolgd (vertrekpunt en opvolging na 3, 6 en 12 maanden). In België zal het project aansluiting vinden bij de lopende prospectieve cohortstudie over de prevalentie, de seroprevalentie en de seroconversie van SARS-CoV-2 bij gezondheidswerkers in Belgische ziekenhuizen. De deelnemers zullen worden verzocht een online vragenlijst in te vullen, met vragen voor de evaluatie van bepaalde psychiatrische stoornissen (PHQ-9, GHQ-12, PTSD) en andere gedragsgebonden en sociale factoren evenals vragen over het sociaal-demografisch statuut, de aard van het uitgevoerde werk, de tests en resultaten voor COVID-19 enz. Het voordeel van de koppeling van de twee studies is het feit dat de verschillen wat betreft de impact op de mentale gezondheid van de eerstelijnszorgverleners besmet met COVID-19 en zij die van de ziekte gespaard zijn gebleven op voorhand kunnen worden geëvalueerd.
