The National Assembly adopted on November 25, 2014, in second reading, the new map with 13 regions, which includes the merger of the Poitou-Charentes, Limousin and Aquitaine regions, as well as that of Nord-Pas-de-Calais and Picardy. This new map increases the number of regions in metropolitan France from 22 to 13.
Bernard Cazeneuve: "There is no ideal map but we had the audacity to make (a map) while being open to change it."
This new map shows the connection of the regions:
Alsace, Champagne-Ardenne and Lorraine,
Aquitaine, Limousin and Poitou-Charentes,
Auvergne and Rhône-Alpes,
Burgundy and Franche Comté,
Languedoc-Roussillon and Midi-Pyrénées,
Nord-Pas-de-Calais and Picardy,
Lower Normandy and Upper Normandy,
6 regions remain unchanged:
Brittany,
Corsica,
Centre,
Île-de-France,
Pays de la Loire,
Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.
What are the challenges for these 13 new regions?
As key players in the country's economic recovery, the regions will be strengthened from 22 to 13. This new territorial map "takes into account the desires for cooperation that have already been initiated by elected officials and will be subject to parliamentary debate", explained the Head of State in his op-ed.
In the long term, French regions will be of equivalent size to other European regions and will thus be "capable of building territorial strategies," Hollande said. As such, they will have broader strategic competences and tools to support the growth of companies.
Tomorrow, the regions will be "the only authority competent to support businesses and promote training and employment policies, to intervene in transport, from regional trains to buses, roads, airports and ports. They will run high schools and colleges. They will be in charge of development and major infrastructure," he said. He added: "they will have their own dynamic financial resources. And they will be managed by reasonably sized assemblies. This means fewer elected representatives".
