In 2013, metropolitan France had 2.3 million children under the age of 3 and the same number of children between the ages of 3 and 6 years. During a typical week, Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., six out of ten children under the age of 3 are cared for most of the time by their parents. However, in almost half of the cases, the child is also entrusted to a nursery assistant most often, to an early childhood institution (ECEC), or to grandparents.
