Advanced Health Indicator IAS® — BACLOFENE AND ALCOOLIQUE DEPENDANCE
Description
Baclofen is a medicine originally intended for the treatment of muscle spasticity. Since 2008, following the work and publications carried out by Dr. Olivier Ameisen, it has been used in the treatment of alcohol dependence. Since March 14, 2014, it has had a Temporary Use Recommendation (TUR) for this new indication. This RTU was issued by the National Agency for Drug Safety (ANSM) for a period of three years.
For associations of patients and doctors who promote the use of baclofen in the treatment of alcohol dependence this discovery is a major event for public health. The objective of IAS baclofen is to monitor the spread of this innovation by assessing the number of patients treated. The estimate is made daily.
The methodology developed by Celtipharm for OpenHealth and the Olivier Ameisen association takes into account the total sales of baclofen in France (under the names Baclofen Zentiva and Lioresal) and an estimate of the quantities consumed as part of the initial indication (muscle spasticity). The result is expressed in the number of 10 mg tablets purchased as part of an addiction treatment.
