Linear alkylbenzenesulfonates (LAS) in rivers of eastern Austria
Description
Linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) are washing-active substances found in detergents, rinses, detergents and shampoos. Of all the abiotic substances, they are most common in the aquatic environment. In Austria, an environmental quality standard (Quality Target Ordinance Chemistry Surface Waters) has been in force for these substances in surface waters since 2006. If the levels of LAS in smaller rivers often exceeded this environmental quality standard of 270 μg/L in 1994, only a maximum of 23 μg/L could be detected in the 2010 analysis. Since 1994, several regulations have been adopted at European level on detergents. The reasons for the decrease in LAS concentrations are consistent compliance with environmental standards for detergents, detergents, detergents and fabric softeners, as well as investments in connection with wastewater treatment plants.
