For several decades, the Research Institute for Nature and Forest (INBO) has been responsible for the construction, selection and management of living collections of trees and shrubs.These collections serve a threefold purpose, namely i. Starting material ii. Test plots and iii. Basic collections.Basic materialBossical basic material includes living collections of trees and shrubs that form the basis for the production of forest reproductive material such as seeds, plant parts and planting stock. In application of the Decree of the Flemish Government on the procedure for the recognition of basic forest material and the marketing of forest reproductive material (3 October 2003), propagating material that is placed on the market may only be harvested from approved basic material.The approved basic material is entered as an ‘authorised unit’ with a unique reference code in the Register of Basic Forest Material maintained by the INBO.In 1948, a selection and breeding programme was developed at the INBO (then Institute for Poplar Cultivation) around poplar, aimed at the production of poplar clones characterised by high and high-quality wood production. From the 1980s onwards, this breeding programme was extended to other economically important tree species such as willow, cress, common ash, black alder, common maple and winter oak.In support of this breeding research, numerous field trials were conducted in which several forest-relevant characteristics were measured and observed periodically (growth, shape, disease resistance, phenology).In the context of climate change, additional field trials have been conducted for several years. The objective is to visualize the adaptability of tree and shrub species by making observations in years with different climatic conditions and in field tests laid out at very different locations.Basic collectionsAt the INBO, basic collections of various tree and shrub species have been laid out for more than half a century. On the one hand, these extremely valuable collections formed the basis of years of breeding programmes of economically valuable tree species with the ultimate aim of selecting or creating genetically high-quality starting material. On the other hand, more recently, several collections were created in function of the preservation of valuable (autochthonous) genotypes and/or populations of native tree and shrub species.
