Biomass; Consumption and production of energy from biomass by technology
Description
This table contains data on biomass consumption, energy production from biomass and the number of sites.
Biomass is the most important form of renewable energy.
Biomass can be consumed in two ways. Firstly, biomass can be used for conversions into other energy carriers. An important example is the conversion of biomass into electricity. Biomass can be finally consumed. This means that no useful energy carrier remains after the consumption of biomass. An example is the burning of wood in stoves.
The data is broken down by technique. Examples are:
- co-firing biomass in power plants
- incineration of waste in waste incineration plants
- the firing of wood-burning stoves by households
- biogas consumption
- the consumption of biofuels for transport
Data available since 1990.
Status of figures:
This table presents final figures up to 2022, further provisional figures for 2023.
Changes as of November 2024:
Figures have been amended for 2022 and 2023. 2022 is now final.
Changes as of 7 June 2024:
Further provisional figures for 2023 have been added.
Changes as of 14 November 2023:
Figures for 2021 and 2022 have been updated. The 2021 figures are now final and the 2022 figures are further provisional.
The figures for 2015-2020 have been revised in other tables on energy. This revision has not been implemented on this table, so there may be inconsistencies of up to 2 percent on an annual basis between the figures for waste incineration plants and total biogas.
Changes as of 2 June 2023:
Provisional figures for 2022 have been added.
Changes as of 15 December 2022:
Further provisional figures for 2021 have been added
Figures for 2020 have been revised.
When will there be new figures:
Preliminary figures for the previous year are published each year in June.
Final figures for the previous year are published each year in November.
