Motherhood access time in 2010
Description
Nearly 790,000 deliveries in 535 maternity wards took place in 2010 in metropolitan France. An increase of 5 % compared to 2001. At the same time, one fifth of maternity hospitals have closed. These closures stem from a movement initiated in the 1970s, the aim of which is to make childbirth safer by closing low-activity maternity wards. Maternity hospitals are now fewer but better equipped.
Despite the reduction in the number of maternity wards, the median access time observed to get there remained stable between 2001 and 2010: half of women take less than 17 minutes to go to give birth. The differences between the municipalities have narrowed, with those with a high access time in 2001 having seen this time decrease. This overall stability of access times is mainly due to a more frequent recourse to motherhood closest to home than before.
The data relate in particular to:
— changes in the supply and time of access to maternity wards between 2001 and 2010;
— municipalities with at least one motherhood in 2001 or 2010;
— the evolution of the median access time observed to maternity between 2001 and 2010, by department;
— the evolution of median time according to the situation of the municipality in 2001;
— the decomposition of the evolution of median access times to maternity hospitals between 2001 and 2010.
