How far from home is hospitalised?
Description
In the Medical Information Systems Program, all hospital stays in medicine, surgery and obstetrics) is the geographic code of residence of the patient, which most often corresponds to the postal code. Using a random method of imputation, a communal code of residence is assigned to each stay. The municipal code of the institution is obtained from the Annual Statistical Survey of Health Institutions (SAE).The distance between the commune of residence and the commune of hospitalisation is then calculated using the Odomatrix software developed by INRA. These distances are calculated as the crow flies, in road kilometres, and in travel time. This latter method is used in the study, averaged between off-peak hours and peak hours. Patients hospitalised in their commune of residence are assigned a zero travel time.The study is limited to the stays of metropolitans (except Corsicans) in metropolitan France, outside Corsica.
