Moss monitoring in Austria
Description
The current report deals with the recording of atmospheric heavy metal and other depositions in Austria using mosses as biomonitors. The mosses were tested for 13 toxicologically relevant metals as well as aluminium, sulfur and nitrogen at 75 sites. Furthermore, the deposition of the 16 EPA PAHs as well as of corons, reten and 1-N-pyres were analyzed at 25 sites. The deposition of metals has largely decreased since 1995. In individual regions, the entries have remained the same or increased. The PAH deposition patterns show increased values at individual points as well as generally in the north-east of Austria. The report is a contribution to monitoring within the framework of the UN ECE Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution.
