Description
This table shows how health care expenditure is related according to the international definition and the health and welfare expenditure used by Statistics Netherlands (CBS). The healthcare providers were chosen as the starting point.
Health care is defined according to the international definition of the System of Health Accounts. All activities of health care count, regardless of whether they take place within or outside the health care sector. Only expenditure on health care of residents counts.
Health and welfare expenditure covers all activities in the field of care, including welfare and childcare, regardless of whether these activities take place as a main or a secondary activity. The care may be for residents or non-residents. The provision of care in the Netherlands for non-residents (such as tourists) is part of the export of services.
In short:
Health and welfare expenditure
-/- expenditure on welfare, childcare, for residents
-/- expenditure on education, research and development and other (non-care) services
-/- expenditure on health-related products such as household care in elderly care, for residents
-/- export and foreign-funded research and development
= Total current expenditure on health

The table contains revised figures for 2021-2023. The table replaces table 'Health and welfare expenditure: national and international comparisons; providers 1998-2022' (see paragraph 3).
