Description
This file contains the pingo ruins located in the district Gorecht in the province of Groningen. Characteristic for the Gorecht are the pingo ruins. Pingo ruins are geologically valuable areas and are created by a natural process during the last ice age, the Weichselien. Saltwater could then reach the surface locally through the permanently frozen topsoil (permafrost) and froze there. Due to the expansion of freezing water, ice hills were formed, pushing the subsurface upwards. During melting, the pressed soil slipped to the edges. After melting, deep, round holes filled with water were left with a ring wall. The pingo ruins on the Noordlaarderesch south of Haren are a good example of this. The province of Groningen wants to prevent the pingo ruins from losing their value due to, among other things, new buildings and plantings, deep ploughing, levelling and sliding off land. The provincial Environmental Ordinance 2016 states that municipalities must preserve the pingo ruins through their zoning plans. This dataset is partly included in the Provincial Environmental Vision 2016-2020. Furthermore, the provincial ordinance 2016 contains rules for the protection of these pingoruines.
