Effects of NO2 emissions from diesel cars on the immission load
Description
From 2001 to 2006, exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) increased at most near-traffic measurement stations in Austria. The main reasons for this are rising NO2 emissions from the transport sector due to the increased mileage, the high proportion of diesel cars in the vehicle fleet and the increase in diesel cars with exhaust gas aftertreatment systems in Austria. These vehicles cause high direct NO2 emissions. Current calculations of pollutants emitted per kilometre driven show that the nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions of Austrian vehicles are decreasing due to technical improvements, but NO2 emissions are increasing. Forecasts up to 2020 show that even if traffic performance remains the same, NO2 emissions will only decrease slightly and the applicable limit values cannot be met without further measures.
