Electricity balance; supply and consumption
Description
This table shows the supply of electricity. The consumption is calculated from the supply. The supply of electricity concerns production plus imports minus exports. Most of the electricity produced is delivered to the public electricity grid by, for example, power plants and wind turbines. A smaller share is generated by companies themselves for the benefit of their own business processes. For example, many gardeners generate electricity themselves for the lighting of their greenhouses.
Net production is determined as gross production minus own consumption of electricity. Own consumption is the amount of electricity consumed by a producer or installation in the production of electricity. Net production shall be broken down in this table by the following energy sources from which the electricity is produced: nuclear energy, coal, oil products, natural gas, biomass, other fuels (non-renewable), hydropower, wind power, solar power and other sources.
Imports and exports shall be further broken down by country of origin or destination.
The total net consumption of electricity in the Netherlands is calculated as net production plus imports less exports and distribution losses.

Full monthly data will be available from 2015. From 1936 per year and from 1976 per month, only total production, imports and exports are known.
Status of figures:
- until 2021 final;
- 2022 and 2023 are further provisional;
2024 is provisional.

Changes as of 14 November 2023:
The figures from 2015 to 2020 have been revised. The improved analysis method causes shifts in the monthly figures for some years, these are most evident in 2018. Here, however, there are relatively large differences visible on a monthly basis of up to 15% on an annual basis, the figures remain constant.
Figures from 2021 to 2023 have been updated. The status of the 2021 figures is now final.
When will there be new figures?
Provisional figures: the second month following the end of the reporting period.
Further preliminary figures: by December of the year following the reporting year.
Final figures: by December of the second year following the reporting year.
