Stress on chickens with varying levels of recreational use of habitats
Description
Chickens are indicators of the quality of a habitat because they have a close habitat binding and are extremely sensitive to disturbances. Disturbances caused by tourist uses can lead to deterioration of habitat quality or even loss of habitat. The result can be a fragmentation of the habitats and associated with it an islanding, which can quickly bring the isolated stocks to extinction. The measurement of stress hormones (or their breakdown products) from solution has been possible for a short time to determine the direct strain on caper valves. These stress hormones are activated in the short term (acute) when needed and cause a general increase in responsiveness, heartbeat rate and body temperature.
