Fragmentation of the landscape by transport

Description

Polygon UAT is an area unfragmented by traffic. It is a part of the landscape bounded by roads with a traffic intensity of more than 1000 vehicles/day or multi-track railway lines with a size greater than or equal to 100 km². The polygons thus defined are further evaluated. On the one hand, the effective area of the polygon, which is a model value which represents an estimate of the size of the area in the polygon actually usable for the species concerned. Furthermore, by dividing UAT polygons according to potential barriers that express the risks of further fragmantation in the future arising from the road network. The potential barrier is a model value that expresses the length of roads with a specified traffic load, which is per 1 km² of polygon. Polygons were also divided according to the overall quality into three overall classes: good, very good, good. Data on the road network and traffic intensities were provided by the Road and Motorway Directorate of the Czech Republic and are from 2000. The map of categorisation of the territory of the Czech Republic in terms of the occurrence and migration of large mammals divides the territory of the Republic into 5 categories from an area of particular importance (I) to an insignificant area (V). Further details can be found in the “Methodological Manual on ensuring the throughput of motorway roads for wildlife” (published by AOPK ČR and Evernia s.r.o., 2001). The UAT polygon models in 2013 and 2025 represent a forecast of further fragmentation of the traffic landscape, which will occur as a result of the projected increase in traffic intensity on the existing road network.
