Nature-friendly banks Water Board Rivierenland
Description
A nature-friendly bank is a bank that is designed in such a way that, in addition to the water-repellent function, the ecological and landscape function has also been taken into account. An important feature is the natural transition from wet to dry: In most cases, nature-friendly banks have faint embankments with clear vegetation.
Over the past twenty years, hundreds of kilometres of nature-friendly banks have been built nationwide. In the coming years, many more kilometers will be added. The Water Framework Directive has given a huge boost to the construction of nature-friendly banks, and continues to do so. It is considered an effective measure to improve the ecological functioning of waters. Other reasons for the construction are improvement of the water quality, defense of the bank and landscape reinforcement.
