Uncut low-traffic areas (UZVR) in North Rhine-Westphalia

Uncut low-traffic spaces (UZVR) are defined as spaces that are not cut up by technogenic elements. In North Rhine-Westphalia, roads above a traffic density of 1000 vehicles in 24 hours, double-track and single-track electrified non-decommissioned railway lines, local locations (10 ha) and airports, areas with a special functional character such as industrial and commercial facilities outside townships and canals with the status of a federal waterway are assessed and taken into account as cutting elements. Types of use with a cutting effect are those that, depending on their spatial distribution and intensity, are an expression of the effect of the cultural influence and characterize a comparatively high degree of change in the landscape (hemerobic degree). The uncut, low-traffic areas were determined by evaluating the official topographic-cartographic information system (ATKIS) of the North Rhine-Westphalia State Surveying Office, which is available as a nationwide database. The UZVR is divided into 5 size classes with a view to a still practicable, nationwide overview. Based on the ATKIS database, a total of 2549 individual areas of UZVR in 5 size classes were identified: 1 - 5 km2, 5 - 10 km2, 10 - 50 km2, 50 - 100 km2 and 100 km2 mapped. The preservation of near-natural habitats and species ensures a livable environment for today's generation and future generations in the long term. Particular importance is attached to the preservation and protection of uncut, low-traffic areas. It is the responsibility of all those involved in the planning process and political decision-makers to ensure that land consumption and thus the fragmentation of the landscape are minimised as far as possible. Spaces with low fragmentation, urban sprawl and noise are a finite resource and can, if at all, only be restored with great effort. A low degree of fragmentation of the landscape and large uncut spaces are thus essential touchstones for sustainable development.
