Sampling points in the Canary Islands SAC sea caves (2022)

Description

The information contained in this dataset represents the dive points carried out as Exits to the Sea carried out between 16 May and 26 October 2022. This is the representation of the spatial distribution of the different diving points where the submerged and semi-submerged caves of the marine SACs of the Canary Islands were sampled. The area covered by the data provided covers five of the islands of the Demarcation Marina Canaria, El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife and Gran Canaria. It is a data set composed of point elements, where each element represents the location of each cave. Each object is associated with a series of alphanumeric variables such as the cave code, coordinates, island, ZEC, campaign, date and whether it is submerged or semi-submerged. In addition, the rest of the variables recorded in each cave are specified: Explo: Initial exploration for the location, determination of depths, dimensions and representation of the habitat. Cart: Cave mapping. Main dimensions or three-dimensional lifting. g_func: Description of the spatial occupation of each functional group Benthos: Description of the taxa that make up each community and the spatial location of each one. muest_b: Taking biological samples for laboratory analysis. vagiles: Vágil fauna censuses water: Water sampling for nutrient and salinity analysis. probe_m: Multiparameter probe profiles, Ta, conductivity, REDOX, pH, dissolved oxygen and depth. Light: Profiles of light intensity measurements. Photo-square: Photo-square record of the bentos. Bubbles: Recording of bubbles in the ceiling. Photos: Recording of photographs and video. The geographical information collected is stored in a spatial database. This work has been financed thanks to the project ‘Technical Scientific Advice for the Protection of the Marine Environment: Evaluation and Monitoring of Marine Strategies, Monitoring of Protected Marine Areas of State Competence (2018-2024)’. Marine Strategies are the marine environmental planning instrument created under Directive 2008/56/EC (as amended by Directive 2017/845) establishing a framework for Community action in the field of marine environmental policy (Marine Strategy Framework Directive), and have as their main objective the achievement of the Good Environmental Status (GES) of our seas. The 11 Good Environmental Status descriptors form the basis for the description and determination of good environmental status of the marine environment. They are established by the Directive in its Annex I. The marine assessment areas are located within the Marine Reporting Units defined in the framework of the Marine Strategies of Spain, these Marine Reporting Units being the units used for notification to the European Commission (MRU).
