Raw material security card of Lower Saxony 1 : 25 000

Description

By taking into account geoscientific and raw material knowledge, it is possible to classify raw material areas and display them accordingly on maps. The result is the raw material security card 1 : 25 000 (RSK25), which is available digitally throughout Lower Saxony and is continuously updated. This information on priority areas for raw materials management is made available to spatial planners. For their work, it is necessary and helpful to divide the raw material areas into value levels. Due to the large number of competing uses of the limited natural area, it is only in this way possible to protect the raw material potential on a large scale, bindingly and in the long term. The selection of areas that must be secured for the country's sufficient supply of raw materials requires, on the one hand, comprehensive geoscientific data, but, on the other hand, as detailed knowledge as possible of regional and supra-regional economic structures. An important basis for the assessment is not only the quality of the different raw materials, but also a rough assessment of the long-term regional and national needs. In this context, account must be taken, for example, of the transport links between the individual areas, as well as the location of certain industrial sectors. An example of this is the cement industry, for which, due to very high operational investments and a very large demand for raw materials, the planning of deposits must be secured in the immediate vicinity of the plant location. For several decades, therefore, in addition to geoscientific data, numerous other data have been collected by the LBEG. In regions where sufficient baseline data is missing, LBEG conducts special drilling programs as well as mineralogical and geochemical surveys of raw materials.
