Nitrogen area balances from agriculture at municipal level – baseline emission monitoring 2023
Description
Nitrogen area balances (N balances) are a tool to quantify nitrogen emissions (nitrogen surpluses) from agriculture. They are an indicator of the efficiency of nitrogen use on farms. For the calculation of the N-balances, the N-input to the utilised agricultural area is compared with the N-discharge via the harvest:
N-input – N-discharge = N-area balance
The result is nitrogen area balances at municipal level, expressed in kg N per hectare per year in relation to the utilised agricultural area. As all data were collected on the basis of the headquarters principle, there are no N balance sheets for the non-municipal areas.
The N-area balances presented here refer to calendar year 2023. They are an important basis for calculating the potential nitrate concentration in leachate. The potential nitrate concentration is used to estimate the leachate quality at the lower bound of the root space at a depth of approximately 2 m.
