Meyer Weiss Atlas Suisse: This data set contains the Swiss map 1:500'000 by J.H. Weiss The Aarau silk ribbon manufacturer Johann Rudolf Meyer (1739 - 1813) decided to produce a particularly accurate map of Switzerland based on exact measurements. He financed this company himself. In 1786 he hired the engineer - topographer Johann Heinrich Weiss from Strasbourg. Weiss made slow progress with his work. The Engelberg mountain farmer Joachim Eugen Müller had led Meyer and Weiss to the Titlis, and had been a great help to them in their work in the mountains. Meyer also engaged him to this end in 1788. Müller showed such skills that Meyer had him work independently in the Alpine region as early as 1790. Inspired by the Pfyffer relief of central Switzerland, which is now located in the Glacier Garden, Meyer chose an unusual way of realization. On the basis of new measurements and precise observations, he first had relief blocks of 1:60,000 scale modelled from gypsum in the terrain. These were then transported individually to Aarau. Weiss was a very talented draughtsman; He converted the relief blocks in Aarau into maps on a scale of 1:108,000. After that, they were engraved by three coppercutters in different manners. The area of Switzerland had space on 16 leaves. Each atlas sheet has the dimensions from 71 to 52 cm. This map collection was created from 1796 to 1802 and later called "Atlas Suisse" or "Meyer Atlas". At the same time, Weiss created an overall map of Switzerland on a scale of 1: 500,000 and published them in 1799 under the name "Nouvelle Carte hydrographique et routière de la Suisse". In 1800, this overall map was added to the Atlas Suisse under the name "Carte générale de l’Atlas Suisse". The "Atlas Suisse" by Meyer and Weiss is the first overall map of the country based on (graphic) triangulation. The AGIS contains the Atlas Suisse with all 16 sheets, as well as the Swiss map by J.H. Weiss. The leaves were scanned and geo-rectified. Color adjustments were made to create a uniform image across the entire territory of Switzerland.
