Change grid crown cover Flanders, 10m resolution, 2015-2018 continuous version

Description

At the request of INBO, the Environment Information Partnership (OIS) of the Environment Policy Domain in 2021 asked Digital Flanders, Earth Observation & Data Science programme (DV-EODaS), and the Flemish Institute for Technological Research, Remote Sensing department (VITO-RS) to investigate whether disappeared trees can be monitored with aerial images and LiDAR data and with satellite data (in this case Sentinel 1 & 2). In this case, tree monitoring is similar to tree canopy monitoring. The term ‘crown cover’ is considered in this project as 'the area covered by (tree) crowns and seen from above by remote sensing techniques'. The project has shown that a Basic Grid Crown Cover can be created on the basis of the Digital Height Model Flanders II LiDAR data (DHMVII) and the Green Maps with a high accuracy and completeness. This basic grid can therefore serve as a basis for monitoring crown cover and can also be used as a reference for training machine learning networks on satellite data (with a higher temporal resolution). Monitoring the crown cover can be done according to the method based on a conceptual vision with different end products for an automatic follow-up of the Flemish capital in crown cover. From this vision and the POC Crown Decrease, both on the basis of the aerial images and on the basis of satellite images, change products have been developed, namely a 3-yearly Change Grid Crown Decrease (VGK) with a resolution of 10m. The datasets were developed for the period 2015-2018 and 2018-2021. For both periods, a continuous and filtered version was created.
