Description

This table contains figures on court criminal cases registered with a public prosecutor’s office, on which a decision has been taken by the Public Prosecution Service (OM) and cases concluded by the court of first instance. Decisions made by the Public Prosecution Service are broken down by type of decision. The court’s decisions are broken down by type of final decision and type of penalty. The data can be broken down by age at the time of committing the offence, type of suspect, type of crime, highest educational attainment, household income and origin characteristics. Cases joined by the judge at the hearing to another case are not counted as a settlement. When determining the type of crime, the most serious fact within the case is considered. This is determined on the basis of the fact that the law provides for the highest penalty. When determining the most serious event, account shall be taken of any mitigating and/or aggravating circumstances. On the basis of the most serious fact, the classification by Standard Classification of Crimes 2010 is made. A case may contain several facts, of which only the most serious are presented in this table. The table is therefore not suitable for determining the frequency of a certain type of crime. The penalty imposed by the court may also have been imposed for a crime other than the most serious one. Individuals can appear as suspects/convicts several times in a year. For example, a person can be a suspect in several cases that flow into the Public Prosecution Service in a year. Secondly, the case of a person may be counted in several stages within a year; for example, if the case flows into the Public Prosecution Service in the same year as the Public Prosecution Service makes a decision in the case. CBS is moving to a new classification of the population by origin. From now on, it is more decisive where someone was born, in addition to where someone's parents were born. The word "migration background" is no longer used. The main classification Western/non-Western is replaced by a classification based on continents and common immigration countries. This classification is gradually introduced in tables and publications with population by origin. Income data (2001 to 2004) and data for highest education attainment (2001 to 2012) are not presented in this table due to limited availability. Since 2011, the definition of the income limit has changed, which may result in a trend reversal. Changes as of April 2024: None, this is a new table.
