National Soil Erosion Inventory (2002-2019). Potential erosion
Description
This Inventory aims to locate, quantify and analyse the evolution of erosive phenomena, with the ultimate aim of delimiting as accurately as possible the priority areas of action in the fight against erosion, as well as to define and assess the actions to be carried out, within the plans and programs whose preparation also attributes the Royal Decree 500/2020, of 28 April, which develops the basic organic structure of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, and amends Royal Decree 139/2020, of 28 January, establishing the basic organizational structure of the ministerial departments.
Potential erosion is understood to be that which would take into account only the conditions of climate, geology and relief, that is, without taking into account the vegetation cover or its modifications due to human action. Consequently, the potential erosion allows to approximate what would happen if in a given area the vegetation cover disappears, although this data must be qualified according to the resilience of the vegetation, determined mainly by the climatic conditions (drought, cold,...), since the effects of this alleged disappearance of the vegetation will be more or less durable and, therefore, more or less severe, depending on the time it takes to recover the cover. The objective is, therefore, to make a classification of the surface according to the potentiality to present laminar erosion or in waterways. For this purpose, only the three factors of the RUSLE model that characterise this potential have been considered: the rain erosion index (R), soil erosion (K) and topography (LS), grouping the results obtained (potential soil losses, in t·ha-1·year-1) at erosive levels, as performed with the estimation of current losses. On the other hand, as already mentioned, this result should be qualified according to the natural climatic recovery capacity of vegetation, which is estimated from the classification in phytoclimatic subregions.
