Suspects; gender, age and recidivism
Description
This table contains figures on registered suspects of a crime recorded in the reporting year. These data can be broken down by gender, age and recidivism.
A person who has been registered more than once within a reporting year is counted only once in the total number of suspects. This table consists of unique suspects.
Some individuals lack personal data, for example if they are not residents of the Netherlands. These people are counted in the table.
The sex and age of a suspect is determined on the last Friday of September of the reporting year. This data comes from the Basic Registration Persons (BRP) or, if the person is not registered in the BRP, from the registration system of the police.
To determine recidivism, we look at having ever been suspected of a crime before. For this purpose, the police registration systems, namely the Basic Provisioning Enforcement (BVH) and Recognition Service System (HKS) are used. The registrations are added together to determine how often someone is registered. Registrations with the same date are counted only once. Based on this number, a person is classified as a first offender, multiple offender or multiple offender. In addition, for many offenders, we look at how often someone is registered in the systems in the reporting year. As an example: if a person committed 1 crime in 2019, 2 crimes in 2020 and 4 crimes in 2022, this person is listed in the table as a first offender in 2019, as a multi-performer in 2020, and in 2021 will not be counted and in 2022 as a repeater (both in the total and in the category of multiple offenders; 2-5 crimes in the reporting year).

Status of the figures:
The figures up to 2020 are final. The figures for 2021 and 2022 are provisional. Preliminary figures give an underestimation of the final number of suspects. The preliminary number of suspects in the most recent year is a few percent lower than the final number.

When new figures will be available:
In mid-April 2024, new figures on registered suspects will be available from the previous year.
