Marine eutrophication assessment areas
Description
This dataset contains the delimitation of the different marine water bodies for the monitoring and evaluation of eutrophication. This information has been used for the evaluation of Descriptor 5 -Eutrofization of Part IV "Descriptors of Good Environmental Status" of the second cycle of Marine Strategies. The marine assessment areas are located within the Marine Demarcations defined within the framework of the Marine Strategies of Spain. Both zonings make up the Marine reporting units (MRU) spatial data set used for reporting to the European Commission in accordance with Directive 2008/56/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council establishing a framework for Community action in the field of marine environmental policy (Marine Strategy Framework Directive - MSFD). The information has been collected, processed and analyzed by the Eutrophication Unit of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) at the Oceanographic Center of Malaga, directed by Dr. Jesús Mercado Carmona. Based on the results obtained by this research team, the Geographic Information Systems Unit of the IEO has been in charge of the mapping. The process has been coordinated by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge.
