Raw materials of electromobility.
Description
Electric vehicles are just as dependent on finite raw materials as vehicles with combustion engines. However, their operation requires up to eight times less raw materials than that of diesel or gasoline vehicles, as no fossil fuels have to be used for this. For this purpose, electric vehicles use other raw materials in larger quantities, which are often mined under socially and/or ecologically critical conditions. These include lithium, cobalt, manganese, nickel, graphite, platinum metals and rare earths. The study analyses sources and globally available reserves of these raw materials and compares them with the expected demand up to 2050. From this, recommendations are derived that help to establish high social and environmental standards in the promotion of the raw materials indispensable for electromobility.
