Description
The public forests of Mayotte are undergoing increasing disturbances as they have an outstanding global ecological interest and play a fundamental role in water resources and the control of soil erosion.
It is in this context that a project to create a national nature reserve, aimed at protecting 3,000 hectares in 6 forest areas, is being prepared in Mayotte with the Departmental Council of Mayotte. This project, supported by the French IUCN Committee,
was officially announced by the Minister of Ecological and Solidarity Transition, Nicolas Hulot, and the Minister of Overseas, Annick Girardin.
Located on a hot spot of terrestrial biodiversity, the project to create a nature reserve is supported by the French Committee of IUCN and has also received a favourable opinion from the Commission “Protected Areas” of the National Council for the Protection of Nature. This reserve is in addition to the management plan for sensitive natural areas and the ecological coherence scheme put in place by the Department of Mayotte.
