Emissions of air pollutants according to NEC Directives
Description
CBS has moved on to a new classification of emission sources.
The table contains annual figures on emissions of a number of air pollutants in the Netherlands as calculated in accordance with the European NEC Directives.
In 2001, the European Parliament and the Council of Europe drafted a directive on national emission ceilings for transboundary air pollution. The directive is simply referred to as the NEC Directive. NEC stands for National Emission Ceilings. Until 2020, the Directive laid down for each Member State the maximum amount of a number of air pollutants that could be emitted annually. As of 2020, the scheme of national emission ceilings has been replaced by one of national emission reduction obligations.
The Directives concern sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), ammonia (NH3), volatile organic compounds other than methane (NMVOC) and particulate matter PM2.5 (particles with a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometres).
The emissions, expressed in kilograms, are broken down by NEC sectors: Energy, Transport, Industry, Agriculture, Waste and Other stationary and mobile sources.

Due to insufficient data quality, the years 1991 to 1994 and 1996 to 1999 are not shown.
Status of the figures:
All 2022 figures are provisional; the figures from 1990 to 2021 are final. In order to achieve a coherent and consistent time series, the complete time series is (re)calculated each year, in the first quarter, so that the latest insights, in particular as regards emission factors, can be taken into account in the calculations.

None, this is a new table. This table is the successor to the table ‘Emissions of air pollutants according to NEC guidelines’.
When will there be new figures?
Final figures for 2022 will be published in February 2024.
