Water consumption by the energy sector
Description
The energy sector is the largest consumer of water in Flanders, 51.1%. This is almost entirely accounted for by the cooling water consumption.
In 2022, the energy sector consumed 1.62 billion m3 of cooling water. Cooling water consumption by the energy sector decreased by 42.9% in the period 2000-2022, mainly due to the closure or conversion of coal-fired power plants.
