Description
This table contains key figures on fertility, live and stillborn children and multiple births by sex. It concerns the births among the inhabitants of the Netherlands.
In this table, the data can be broken down into the following characteristics:
— Live born children by sex;
— Live born children by mother’s age (on 31 December) in age groups;
— Live born children by order of birth from the mother;
— Live born children according to the marital status of the mother;
— Live born children by country of birth and country of origin of the mother;
— Stillborn children by gestational age;
— Births: singles and multiples;
— Average number of children per woman;
— Average number of children per man;
— Average age of the mother by order of birth from the mother;
— Average age of the father by order of birth from the mother;
— Net replacement factor.
CBS is moving on to a new classification of the population by origin. From now on, it is more decisive where someone was born, in addition to where one’s parents were born. The word ‘migration background’ is no longer used. The main division of Western/Non-Western is replaced by a classification based on continents and common immigration countries. This classification is gradually introduced in tables and publications with population by origin.
Data available from:
Most of the data is available from 1950 onwards.
Exceptions to this are live-born children by mother’s country of birth and country of origin (as of 2021, at a later date, numbers over earlier periods will be added), stillborn children with a gestational age of 24 or more weeks (from 1991), the average number of children per man (from 1996) and the average age of the father (from 1996 onwards).
Status of the figures:
All figures included in the table are final figures.
Amendment as of 23 November 2023:
None, this is a new table.
This table replaces table 'Birth; key figures, 1950-2022' which has been discontinued. A link to this table is included in paragraph 3.
The following changes have been made:
The topics related to the mother’s living born children by migrant background have been replaced by live born children by mother’s country of birth (the Netherlands, outside the Netherlands) and country of origin (the Netherlands, Europe (excluding the Netherlands) and outside Europe) of the mother.
When will there be new figures?
In the third quarter of 2024, the final figures for 2023 will be included in this publication.
