Population born outside the Netherlands; country of origin, length of stay, 1 January
Description
This table contains data on persons born outside the Netherlands living in the Netherlands by sex, age, country of origin and length of stay in the Netherlands, 1 January.
CBS is moving to a new classification of the population by origin. From now on, it is more decisive where someone was born, in addition to where someone's parents were born. The word "migration background" is no longer used. The main classification Western/non-Western is replaced by a classification based on continents and common immigration countries. This classification is gradually introduced in tables and publications with population by origin.

This table is the successor to 'Population with a migrant background by length of stay in the Netherlands, 1 January'. See paragraph 3.
The following changes have been made to the discontinued table:
- The topic 'First generation migration background' has been replaced by 'Population born outside the Netherlands';
- The selection 'Sex' has been moved from the topics to a separate tab;
- The 'Migration Background' tab has been replaced with 'Country of Origin'.
- The countries of origin Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Turkey are allotted to continent Asia (was Europe);
When will there be new figures?
For the time being, only data from 2022 onwards is available in the table. Previous periods will be added to the table at a later date.
In the second quarter of 2025, the figures as of 1 January 2025 are included in this table.
