Description

An invasive exotic species (IEE) is a plant, animal, or microorganism introduced outside of its natural range. Its establishment and spread can pose a threat to the environment, economy, or society. Some species are of particular concern because they can pose a threat to biodiversity, the functioning of natural ecosystems, or human health. In contrast, some exotic species have been present in Quebec for a long time and are now part of the landscape, such as common carp and dandelions. Although they can cause problems locally, they are not monitored or controlled. The following list lists the main EEE (fauna, flora and fungi) that may pose a risk to Quebec. Several EEE's are already established. Several other species are considered to be “on our doorstep.” It is not certain that all of these species are currently in a position to successfully establish themselves in the Quebec climate. However, their presence in states or provinces bordering Quebec encourages caution. Climate change could mean that a species that is currently restricted by winter temperatures may eventually be able to establish itself in some parts of the province. The file indicates the kingdom, the category, the French name, the French name, the Latin name, the English name of each species as well as the category of its presence in Quebec. The presence of an EEE in Quebec is listed according to the following categories: - Absent: the species has never been observed in Quebec; - Occasional observation: the species has been observed on some occasions, but there is no evidence that individuals survive and reproduce independently in order to form a population; - Recurrent observation: the species has been observed on several occasions, but there is no proof that the individuals survive and reproduce independently so as to form a population; - Established: the species is observed and there is evidence or good reason to believe that individuals survive and reproduce independently in order to form a population.
