This content includes the maritime jurisdictional limits of Spain in all the typologies currently contemplated; internal waters, straight baseline, territorial sea, contiguous zone, exclusive economic zone, fisheries protection zone, continental shelf and extended continental shelf, as well as areas poorly defined as bordering areas where other countries exercise sovereignty.
This area as a whole exceeds one million square kilometers and hosts a multitude of activities, so it is subject to significant pressures and impacts that condition its environmental quality. The legal sources that apply in each case have been followed, from the provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea to the legal references emanating from the Autonomous Communities, the Spanish State and the European Union, among other legal instruments.
