Peat probability 1.5 to 10 m 50x50 m

Description

This map indicates the peat probability for the shallow subsoil (1.5 to 10 m) for the territory of Flanders. This map gives a good picture of the spatial variation of peat and is a first estimate for where peat is present in Flanders with a high probability based on the best available data and techniques. The map does not provide information about the thickness of the peat or the depth at which it is likely to occur within the 1.5-10m interval. The grid map is the result of applying the method and the data from the study 'Veen in Flemish soil and subsurface in relation to climate and above- and underground use of space' (performed by KUL on behalf of DOMG) to calculate a 5x5 m peat probability map for the shallow subsurface. The final report of this study can be found at: https://researchportal.be/en/publication/feather-Flemish-soil-and-underground-relationship-to-climate-and-above-and-underground. This grid map has been drawn up so that the method used to draw up the peat probability maps for the three depth intervals (surface bog, soil profile and shallow subsoil) remains in line with each other as much as possible. Given the different purposes of this map compared to the surface peat and soil profile peat maps, it has been decided to divide this map into the 6 classes proposed by KUL (rare, unlikely, possible, likely, very likely, almost certain) and to scale it up from 5x5 m to 50x50 m. However, for local applications or applications where high certainty about the presence of peat with a high spatial detail is required, caution remains necessary and an additional field verification may be a preferred next step. Since peat can occur very irregularly in the landscape, the maps drawn up cannot perfectly reflect this variability. The study makes use of both historical data (which can go back to the 19th century) and recent data from observations of peat in the subsurface. Certainly for the historical data, it is possible that the peat observed at the time is no longer present, which imposes limitations on the accuracy of the final result. During the creation of this map, no correction was made for known excavations (port docks, canals, ...), infrastructure in the subsurface (tunnels, cellars, ...) and watercourses. This allows the model to make erroneous predictions for these locations. Furthermore, due to the applied techniques, the “there is probably peat present” here can be both a thick peat pack over the full thickness of the depth interval and a thin layer of peat somewhere in the profile. This map, together with the peat probability map of the surface bog and the peat soil profile, forms a set that is the result of the same recalculation exercise based on the results of the study carried out by KUL.
