Traditional costumes from Schleswig-Holstein and Denmark
Description
The National Historical Collection has a selection of representations of typical regional costumes from Schleswig-Holstein and Denmark from the first half of the 19th century. The colored and monochrome lithographs, woodcuts, etchings and other prints illustrate the traditional, contemporary and regional fashion of the rural population from North Frisia, Dithmarschen, Hamburg or Holstein. Some photographs from the late 19th century are also included. The illustrations illustrate how regional affiliation and social identity were reflected in the form of certain clothes. It depicts everyday clothing of various professional fields such as peasants, boatmen, butter girls or captain’s wife, as well as clothing for special occasions, such as weddings, Sunday church or communion. Both women and men from different regions were portrayed, with not only the clothes but also the hairdress being varied. The graphics were made by well-known lithographers and drawings from Schleswig-Holstein as well as by unknown artists.
