Description

The recommended screening test for cervical cancer is the Pap test, which is performed every three years for women aged 25 to 64 years. The effectiveness of this screening has been demonstrated both by the reduction of mortality in the areas where it has been applied and by specific studies. 34.1% of the women invited in 2015 took the Pap-test. In 2014, in one case (0.008%) the outcome was cancer, severe dysplasia in 15 cases (0.13%) and mild or average dysplasia in 251 cases (2.09%). The recommended screening test for breast cancer is a mammogram every two years for women between the ages of 50 and 69. Participation in an invitation-based screening program can reduce the likelihood of dying from breast cancer by 35%. In South Tyrol, the screening program for this cancer has been active at the provincial level since 2003. In 2015, 54.6% joined the screening program. In 2014, 63 cases were found to have a positive screening test (4.1‰). Colorectal cancer screening has two possible goals: early identification of invasive neoplastic forms Therapeutic removal of adenomatous polyps to disrupt the natural history of the disease by preventing possible adenoma-cancer progression. One of the earliest signs of a tumor or intestinal polyp is bleeding inside the intestinal lumen, resulting in blood in the stool. The test that is performed in the screening phase is intended to find blood in the stool, even when it is present in very small amounts that are not visible to the naked eye. The search for occult blood in people who have no other risk factors for colorectal cancer than age, is one of the most effective prevention strategies. In South Tyrol, the screening program for this cancer has been active at the provincial level since 2012. In 2015, 41.8% joined the screening programme. In 2014, 4.0% tested positive for occult blood and 62 (2.2‰) cases were diagnosed with carcinoma.
