Description
Since 1846, the management of forests in Belgium has been based on data collected by means of 10-yearly burrows. The latter were carried out through direct consultation of forest owners through questionnaires. In order to optimise the storage and processing of the data for the management of forest heritage, a digital forest map was drawn up by Eurosense Technologies nv during the period 1978-1992 on the basis of the interpretation of colour infrared orthophotos (flying scale 1:5000) on behalf of the Forest and Green Division, AMINAL, LIN, Ministry of the Flemish Community. This forest mapping was, through applications of GIS principles, transformed in 1994 by the Flemish Land Agency into an integrated database that contains both a geographical (the forest polygons with their respective georeference) and a descriptive (the characteristics such as owner class, tree species, municipality, forestry, etc.) component.
