Potential areas for hydrogen storage in Schleswig-Holstein

Description

It shows the distribution of salinar rocks within the boundaries of the salt dome for the installation of hydrogen/natural gas storage caverns and the maximum acceptable depth of the salt dome roof. Due to their structural development, the salt domes are internally complex - made up of the salt rocks of Zechstein and Rotliegend - as double salinars and have overhangs in their flank areas. In order to define horizons worthy of investigation for the storage of hydrogen or natural gas, the depth of the salt dome roof (top of the Zechstein and rotliegend deposits) up to 1300 m and NHN served essentially as the maximum depth acceptable for the insulation of caverns (current knowledge). From drilling results it can be deduced that locally, due to the formation of thick hat rocks, the solable rock can also lie deeper than 1300 m below NHN within the designated areas. A use of the flank areas will not be possible due to the expected, differently formed overhangs.
