Description
Due to numerous hydraulic engineering interventions, the March has lost the character of a meandering lowland river over long distances; The surrounding ecosystems began to deteriorate. In cooperation with Slovakia, a pilot project was carried out in the section between Zwerndorf and Marchegg with the aim of improving bank structuring, increasing connectivity with the surrounding area and preparing the connection to the meanders separated from the river. It turns out that the redesigned habitats are again accepted by most animal and plant species. The ecological status of the March and the connection to the groundwater have also improved significantly. The results contribute to the improvement of the planning of measures for rivers of the Pannonian type and provide the basis for the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive.
