Large-scale near-natural forest complexes

Description

An overview of Saxony's large-scale near-natural forest complexes has been compiled in connection with the description of Saxony's potential natural vegetation (cf. SCHMIDT et al. 2002: 115ff). The selection of the areas was mainly determined by the criteria of forest biotope mapping, according to which the current, area-related tree species composition (equivalent to at least 80 percent of the potential natural vegetation) and the age of the stands (at least half of the rotation time) were used for the determination of rare near-natural forest communities. Furthermore, requirements of the BfN regarding the area size of large-area near-natural forest complexes had to be observed (at least 100 ha in forest-rich areas, at least 30 ha in forest-poor areas). The data were updated in 2012 for the landscape programme. Area No. 8 "Jagdschloss Weißwasser und Umgebung" was removed as it is used by the Nochten opencast mine.
