Description

In the Middle Ages, the Netherlands was rapidly deforested and around 1650 there was almost no forest left. The map “historical entries” shows where the last forests were, at least the forests we know from historical writings. And the map “forest-place names” shows the location of places and hamlets whose medieval name refers to forest. In the Middle Ages a lot of forest had already disappeared, but in these places there was still forest when the settlements were formed. Different types of forest names point to different types of medieval forest. There are regional differences.
