Heat pumps; numbers, thermal power and energy flows

Description

This table contains figures on the number of heat pumps, the capacity of these heat pumps and the amount of energy produced and consumed. The temperature of ambient heat from the soil, surface water or outside air is often not high enough for direct use. That is why heat pumps are used to bring the temperature to a sufficiently high level. Ambient heat is a form of renewable energy. Figures on avoided fossil energy consumption and avoided carbon dioxide emissions have also been included. The data can be broken down by heat source (soil/water or outdoor air) and by sector (residential or non-residential). Heat pumps that use PVT (solar collectors) as a heat source count in the category of soil or water. Heat pumps that use ventilation return air as a heat source count in the category outdoor air-water. From 2022 onwards, the number of hybrid systems will be shown for outdoor air-to-water and ground-to-water heat pumps. Hybrid means a heat pump that works in combination with a natural gas boiler. The natural gas boiler becomes active when the heat demand can no longer be supplied by the heat pump alone. When compiling the information, we asked about the sold heat pumps that were sure to be used as hybrids. In reality, the number of hybrid heat pumps may be higher than what is shown in this table. Data available from: 1994 Status of figures: This table presents final figures up to 2022 and further provisional figures for 2023. Changes as of November 2024: Figures for 2022 and 2023 have been updated. Figures for 2020 and 2021 have been revised. For outdoor air-to-air heat pumps and outdoor air-to-water heat pumps, some corrections have been made in response to new insights. Ventilation return air-to-water heat pumps have been added to the outdoor air-to-water category for 2021, 2022 and 2023. As a result of these changes, the 2020 figures in this table differ from comparable figures in the Renewable Energy table; consumption by energy source, technology and application. Changes as of 26 April 2024: Preliminary figures for 2023 have been added. Figures for 2022 have been revised. For heat pumps put into operation in the years 2022 and 2023, it was not possible to distinguish between sectors (residential and non-residential) on the basis of the available information. As a result, the topics ‘Committed heat pumps’ and ‘Committed thermal capacity’ of these years are displayed as ‘.’. The totals for 2022 and 2023 are available. Figures on installed heat pumps by sector in 2022 have been slightly adjusted. As a result, energy flows by sector are also changing. Changes as of 19 April 2023: None, this is a new table. This table is the successor to "Heat pumps; numbers, thermal input and energy flows, 1994-2021". See paragraph 3. When will there be new figures: Preliminary figures for the previous year in April each year. Preliminary figures for the previous year are published each year in November. Final figures are published in November of the second year after the year under review.
