Description
The deposit of waste in landfills can pose risks to the environment and health due to pollutants in the waste and environmental transformation processes in the landfill body. In landfills, however, there are also recyclable materials that can be used again in times of growing resource requirements. In the report "Landfill Dismantling", the Federal Environment Agency provides an overview of the current status of landfill dismantling and analyses the possibilities for landfill mining in Austria. For this purpose, the previous experience in landfill dismantling in German-speaking countries is presented and the technical aspects are documented. Based on the amount of waste and waste types deposited in Austria, the existing resource potential is estimated, an economic evaluation is carried out and the climate relevance of recyclable material recovery is analyzed.
