Sentinel Hospitals for Severe Acute Respiratory Illness

Description

Description of overall objectiveTo contribute to the early detection of clinical and virological signals of severity in periods of epidemic or pandemic influenza. Description of specific objectives 1) To collect data about severe cases of influenza through a network of 6 sentinel hospitals ; 2) In the course of an epidemic or a pandemic, to detect signals of severity, to rate the severity of the epidemic, and to update the annual risk assessment accordingly; 3) To describe genotypic and phenotypic characteristics (type, subtype, genetic mutations, antiviral susceptibility) of influenza viruses associated with severe forms of infection and to maximize the likelihood to detect genetic mutations associated to virulence, severity and antiviral resistance 4) To timely report about severe cases of influenza to Belgian health authorities; 5) To match the efforts of European Institutions (ECDC/WHO-Euro) to annually estimate the severity of epidemics or pandemics.
