Government; ownership of the established debt 1998-2009
Description
This table shows the established government debt broken down by
money givers. The total debt is determined from the National
accounts such as debt in government bonds and long loans.
In addition, the debts within the government (e.g. from the central
government to the regional government concerning the possession of municipalities and
provinces in government bonds) not taken into account. This provides the
consolidated established government debt on. The bond debt
is, like the property in bonds of the lenders, recognised against
market value. This deviates from the EMU debt, in which bonds against
nominal value is included.
The distribution by lender concerns the counterparties that play a role
in the financing of the established public debt. There are two
sources for counterparties’ data.
The statistics Institutional investors are the source of the
holdings of government bonds of financial institutions and their
long-term loans to the government. From the National Accounts
data on the share of foreign countries in the
government debt and domestic debt excluding the financial
institutions.
The table contains both absolute data in billions of euros and the
percentage share of lenders in public debt.

Status of the figures
The results up to 2007 are final, the results for 2008
are more provisional and provisional for 2009.
Changes as of 13 October 2010:
Data for 2009 have been added and adjustments have been made in the
results for 2007 and 2008.
