Youth Health Monitor; GGDs and RIVM

Description

Every four years, all GGDs in the Netherlands collect data on the health, well-being and lifestyle of young people through the Youth Health Monitor. This large-scale digital questionnaire survey takes place among pupils in grades 2 and 4 of regular secondary education. All GGDs carry out the survey in the same year in a uniform manner. GGDs use the same digital (basic) questionnaire for this purpose. This makes it possible to compare the results at national, regional and local level. The basic questionnaire includes questions related to mental and physical health, resilience, confidence in the future, happiness, stress and resilience, (cyber)bullying, sexting, smoking, drinking and cannabis use, exercise and social media and gaming. The results of the research help develop policies to improve the health of high school students. Since 2015, the Youth Health Monitor has been implemented in a harmonised manner at national level four times. The management of the national data files is the responsibility of RIVM. Youth Health Monitor 2023 (N=188.421): In all GGD regions, all schools were invited to participate. After merging all regional files and cleaning the data, the file contains data of 188,421 young people. All 25 GGD regions have contributed to prevalence rates at national, regional and municipal level. Corona Youth Health Monitor 2021 (N=166.786): An additional measurement was carried out in 2021 as part of the COVID-19 Health Survey of the GOR Network. The GOR network consists of GGDs, GGD GHOR Nederland, RIVM, NIVEL and ARQ Nationaal Psychotrauma Centrum. In all GGD regions, all schools were invited to participate. After merging all regional files and cleaning up the data, the file contains data of 166,786 young people. All 25 GGD regions have contributed to prevalence rates at national, regional and municipal level. Youth Health Monitor 2019 (N=171.192): The size of the samples differed per GGD region. After merging all regional files and cleaning up the data, the national database contains data of 171,192 young people. All 25 GGD regions contributed to prevalence rates at regional (GGD region) and national level. In 19 GGD regions, all schools were invited to participate in the questionnaire survey, so that prevalence figures for municipalities are also available in those regions. Youth Health Monitor 2015 (N=96.919): The size of the samples differed per GGD region. After merging all regional files and cleaning up the data, the national database contains data of 96,919 young people. All 25 GGD regions have contributed to prevalence rates at national level. In addition, prevalence rates at regional level (GGD region) are also available in 14 regions. In 9 of those 14 GGD regions, all schools were invited to participate in the questionnaire survey, so that prevalence figures for municipalities are also available in those regions.
