Secondary inorganic aerosol
Description
Secondary inorganic aerosol: Ammonium sulphate and ammonium nitrate, as secondary inorganic aerosol (SAA) at rural background sites in Austria, contribute between one third and more than half to PM10 and PM2.5 pollution, respectively; in the urban background, its share (with higher contributions of primary particles) is in the range of about 25-40%. A significant proportion of this comes from cross-border transport of pollutants. SAA is thus a decisive factor for compliance with the objectives of the IG-L or the Ambient Air Quality Directive and is addressed via the precursors in the NEC Directive because of its cross-border importance. On the basis of literature research on model calculations, it is shown how the PM2.5 pollution could develop if the emissions of precursor substances change (Chapter 5). It examines which precursor substances may represent the limiting factors in certain regions in Austria.
