Historical geography — tollhouses
Description
File with former toll houses. Tolls could be levied for the loss of the costs of construction, maintenance and safety on (navigation) roads. Roads were divided into lanes, which were bounded by a toll tree or toll fence near a tollgarden house. For the passage of persons and goods, the toll (right or tax) had to be paid to the tollgaarder. The houses have a characteristic T-shaped floor plan, in which the extension at right angles on the road through the side windows provided a view of the approaching traffic.
